World Ocean Day 2026: Why packaging is part of the ocean story.
Packaging has become part of the ocean story. What leaves the shelf does not simply disappear. It travels through waste systems, waterways, and supply chains, often with consequences far beyond the point of sale.
Every year on June 8, World Ocean Day invites us to reflect on something we often take for granted. The ocean covers more than 70% of the planet, helps regulate climate, supports livelihoods, and produces a large share of the oxygen we rely on. In 2026, that conversation feels more urgent. With the High Seas Treaty (Marine Biology Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement) now in force and global momentum building around stronger marine protection, the message is clear: ocean health cannot be separated from the way we design, use and manage packaging.
That is where packaging becomes part of the ocean story. What leaves the shelf does not simply disappear. It travels through waste systems, waterways, and supply chains, often with consequences far beyond the point of sale.
