Upfield, the owner of Flora spread, proudly unveils a revolutionary achievement – the world’s first plastic-free, recyclable tub for its plant butters and spreads. In a four-year collaboration with Footprint, MCC, and Pagès Group, this innovative project introduces a sustainable solution that aims to replace up to two billion plastic tubs by 2030, curbing more than 25,000 tons of plastic waste annually.
The initial launch in Austria with Flora Plant in late 2023 marked a significant milestone for Upfield’s commitment to sustainable packaging across its four categories: butters and spreads, creams, liquids, and cheeses.
Crafted from compressed wet paper fibres, the paper tubs boast waterproof and oil-proof properties while remaining recyclable in local paper waste streams. Achieving Conventional Plastic Free Certification, the tubs utilise paper from a PEFC-certified supplier. Upfield anticipates obtaining home compostability certification by 2025, further solidifying their dedication to environmentally conscious packaging.
David Haines, Group Chief Executive of Upfield, expressed pride in the company’s efforts, stating, “When we established Upfield, innovating our way out of plastic tubs was our moon-shot, and I am very proud of all Upfielders that continue to work towards this goal.”
Karina Cerdeira, Head of Packaging for Upfield, highlighted the collaboration with Footprint, stating, “This new paper tub marks a true milestone for sustainable packaging that significantly minimises reliance on plastic.”
Yoke Chung, Co-founder and Chief Technology & Innovation Officer for Footprint, emphasized the transformative influence of innovation in fostering positive environmental change. He added, “This collaborative effort underscores the transformative influence of innovation in fostering positive environmental change to shape a brighter future for everyone.”
With a commitment to pushing boundaries through further innovation, Upfield envisions inspiring other businesses to pursue positive change in packaging sustainability. The paper-based tub stands as a beacon of progress, encouraging a shift towards more eco-friendly and responsible packaging practices across the industry.
