Absolut reveals the latest step on its journey towards creating a ‘100% bio-based bottle’

Absolut Vodka has introduced a new bottle incorporating 57% paper and a plastic lining, representing a progressive milestone in its pursuit of a fully bio-based bottle down the line.
Absolut is collaborating with Paboco, the Paper Bottle Company, along with global brands such as The Coca-Cola Company, Carlsberg, P&G, and L’Oréal, as part of the bottle initiative. The initiative involves the development of a bottle that is 57% paper and incorporates a recyclable plastic barrier.
Absolut emphasizes that customers can recycle the packaging as paper through regular household waste disposal. This marks the first time a global spirits company will sell such bottles in stores, following previous testing at festivals in the UK and Sweden. The trial aims to gather feedback from consumers, retailers, and supply chain partners to guide Absolut’s journey towards a commercially viable, fully bio-based bottle.
During the trial, the bottle’s transportation and consumer perception will be assessed. Unlike the initial tests involving Absolut Mixt ready-to-drink, which had a low alcohol by volume (ABV) of 5%, this trial will use Absolut Vodka with a higher ABV of 40%.
The 500ml-sized single-mould bottles will be sold in 22 Tesco stores (RRP £16) across Greater Manchester throughout the summer.
