McDonald’s France partners with Checkpoint Systems to introduce food-safe RFID technology in its new reusable containers, aiming to improve tracking, optimize inventory management, and reduce waste. Checkpoint Systems claims to have developed one of the first-ever food-safe, heat- and water-resistant RFID solutions to monitor cups, bottles, and containers for fries. With RFID hardware and software installed in over 1,200 restaurants, McDonald’s gains real-time visibility of its reusable tableware stock, streamlining inventory management and replenishment.
The RFID database ensures up to 99% accuracy in real-time stock inventory records, facilitating automated track and trace functions to locate missing containers and prevent shrinkage. Embracing this technology aligns with new French legislation introduced in 2023, promoting a circular economy and reducing packaging waste. “Europe is tasked with achieving a circular economy within the next decade, and getting there will pose a number of operational obstacles.” Julien Thibult, RFID sales director at Checkpoint France, highlights the unique challenge faced by the sector due to the new legislation, emphasizing the importance of sustainable business practices. Frederic Boukara, business unit director at Checkpoint Systems, stresses that their RFID solution enables McDonald’s to improve supply chain operations, visibility, and align with environmental goals.
McDonald’s Corporation will produce a report on the environmental and financial impact of transitioning into reusable packaging. Packaging Europe discusses the benefits of RFID technology with Katherine Fleet, head of Sustainability & Circularity at RECOUP, underlining its role in enhancing traceability and hygiene in reusability systems.
