In a remarkable stride towards sustainability, Lidl GB has made a conscious shift to compostable tea bags for its own-brand range, setting the stage for a reduction of a whopping 800 million bags annually ending up in landfills. This monumental step aligns with the company’s steadfast commitment to environmental well-being.
Crafted from polylactic acid (PLA), the new compostable tea bags stand as a beacon of eco-friendliness. Lidl’s signature products embracing this change include the Deluxe Fairtrade Assam Tea and the esteemed Knightsbridge Gold Blend Tea from the Knightsbridge range.
Shyam Unarket, Head of Responsible Sourcing and Ethical Trade at Lidl GB, underlined the significance of this transformation, stating, “Those buying tea bags from Lidl are supporting our efforts to reduce single-use plastic going to landfill. We understand that even a few small changes to our products can benefit our customers, while helping us improve our impact on the planet – one cup at a time.”
This momentous announcement comes hot on the heels of the retailer’s other packaging revolutions. In June, Lidl boldly introduced a vacuum-packed format for its beef mince assortment, resulting in an impressive 63% reduction in plastic usage.
Not content with just one eco-friendly advancement, Lidl continues to make waves. Their pioneering move to incorporate Prevented Ocean Plastic into their water bottles showcases their commitment to pushing the envelope of sustainability. In fact, Lidl proudly claimed the title of being the first UK supermarket to embrace this innovation.
Lidl GB’s transition to compostable tea bags is a testament to their dedication to creating a more sustainable and environmentally conscious world. This change is more than just a packaging revolution; it’s a testament to the brand’s unwavering determination to create meaningful change, sip by sip.
