Aldi Leads the Charge: UK’s First Supermarket Paper Wine Bottles Hit Shelves

Innovative Collaboration with Frugalpac Promises Sustainable Sips for Eco-Conscious Consumers

Aldi is set to revolutionise the UK’s supermarket wine scene by introducing its own-brand wines packaged in paper bottles, a first of its kind in the country. Teaming up with Frugalpac, the discount giant will unveil the Cambalala South African Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc varieties in lightweight paper bottles, hitting shelves from 18 March to coincide with Global Recycling Day.

Crafted from 94% recycled paperboard and featuring a food-grade pouch to hold the wine, these innovative bottles are fully recyclable, offering a sustainable alternative that’s five times lighter than traditional glass bottles. Aldi boasts a significant carbon footprint reduction by opting for paper over glass, equivalent to circumnavigating the globe 5.8 times – a move sure to resonate with eco-conscious consumers.

Aldi UK’s managing director of buying, Julie Ashfield, expressed pride in spearheading this eco-friendly initiative, stating, “Shoppers are striving to become more sustainable in their everyday lives, looking for small ways to make a big difference for our planet. We are proud to be the first supermarket to launch an own-brand paper bottle, helping to drive sustainable change.”

Malcolm Waugh, CEO of Frugalpac, echoed the sentiment, expressing excitement over the partnership with Aldi and the opportunity to offer more consumers the chance to embrace greener choices. “Launching in a major UK supermarket means more shoppers can now drink responsibly and sustainably, and we are so pleased to be part of that journey,” Waugh said.

With this groundbreaking launch, Aldi and Frugalpac aim to empower shoppers to enjoy their favourite wines with a clear conscience, proving that sustainability and quality can go hand in hand.
